The best wine-bacon pairings

Pairings 🕔April 25, 2017

In just a couple of weeks, Mt. Vernon Winery will be celebrating 18 years of being in business. We thought of no better way to enjoy the milestone than hosting a day of Blues, Bottles and Bacon!

On May 6, Two-Tone Steiny & The Cadillacs will bring their rhythm and blues to our beautiful winery estates in Auburn for our party. We will also serve up an impressive menu, and lots of bacon, thanks to our friends who run the Bacon Mania Food Truck.

Of course, Mt. Vernon is bringing the wine.

Many of you already have your favorites – from our Cabernet Sauvignon to our Estate Zinfandel –  but are left wondering which of these are best paired with the variety and quality of food found on  Bacon Mania’s menu.

Here’s your Mt. Vernon Wine and Bacon Mania Guide:

Boss Hog Bacon Cheeseburger

When you’re having a hearty burger that includes bacon, there’s no other choice but a full-bodied red. The messiest burger deserves a Mt. Vernon Merlot, Grenache or Syrah. The tannins and acidity in these wines will balance all that deliciousness of that mouth-watering half-pound burger.

The Big Pig

If you’re up for the challenge of devouring slow-cooked pulled pork mixed with smoked bacon and BBQ sauce, our Zinfandel is the perfect match. The sweet and peppery notes will act as a second sauce to your pulled-pork sandwich. A big red like a Petite Syrah also will do. Remember, if you opt for a spicier sandwich, the alcohol content in these amazing reds can add a little fuel to the fire – which you may love!

Mac and Cheese

We all love a little cheese with our wine, but what do we pair with a creamy sharp cheddar macaroni? We recommend our Grenache. Its elegant and soft grapes allow for a tootie-fruity finish, which is a great counter to all the cheesy goodness.

Chili Dog

There’s nothing quite like a good old-fashion, all-beef hot dog. Of course, Bacon Mania doesn’t stop there and wraps the dog in bacon and tops it with freshly cooked chili. For this decadent dog, with its oversized chili flavors and cheese, a glass of our Estate Zinfandel fits the bill. The low tannins, zippy bright acids and fruity finish, will go perfectly alongside all that meatiness, chili and spice.

We look forward to this amazing day of Bacon, Bottles and Blues. We hope you can join us because you are the reason for the day’s festivities. Without you, we wouldn’t have been able to be where we are. After 18 years of winemaking, we all deserve this day!
