Gov. Jerry Brown has issued a proclamation declaring September “California Wine Month.”

In the official release, Gov. Brown stated the following:

“While there is some dispute as to when and where the first vines were planted, it is clear that California viticulture was flourishing by the late 1770s. The first winery was established at Mission San Gabriel during this period. Nearly all grapes grown in California at the time were of a hardy, disease-resistant strain that came to be known as the “mission grape,” a mainstay of the early commercial industry that is still used in some fine California wines and sherries today.”

“This month, millions of tourists will come to our state from around the world to sample our vintages and enjoy the many other attractions that our several distinct wine regions have to offer. I hope that many Californians will join me in raising a glass to the pioneers, beginning with Padre Kino, who helped bring this amazing bounty to our state, and the many diligent and innovative workers today who help the industry continue to thrive.”

We at Mt. Vernon Winery raise our glass to the pioneers as well as Gov. Brown for declaring September California Wine Month because the state’s history in the industry and exponential success around the world is something that should definitely be acknowledged.

We are proud of our history of being a winery in Auburn, California. Established in 1996, Mt. Vernon Winery is believed to be the largest winery in Placer County since prohibition. We are pioneering the production of many foothill grapes including Old-Vine Zinfandel, Syrah, Port, Barbera, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and barrel-fermented Chardonnay. We believe our winery offers the true California wine experience through a majestic view and relaxing atmosphere. Take a virtual tour of our tasting room to see for yourself!
