We went fishing – but we’re back!

All of us here at Mt. Vernon circle our calendars for late summer when we embark on our Wine Club Member Alaska fishing trip.

This year’s fun group, which included some of our Wine Club members and our Winemaker, Ryan Taylor, headed out earlier this summer for the 2nd Annual Alaska Fishing Lodge Trip.

We flew into Ninilchik, Alaska, southwest of Anchorage, and arrived at Captain Steve’s Fishing Lodge by way of Homer.

The fishing lodge offers all-day guided fishing adventures and plenty of chances to catch many of the fish the state is famous for. The fishing opportunities are truly unreal. Last year, in fact, the average halibut size weighed in at 40 pounds. We happily walked away with 125 pounds of fish per person. It was quite the fish haul!

The lodge, as you would expect, was as beautiful as last year! It’s located about 200 miles from Anchorage and features 11 guest bedrooms each with its own restroom. Inside, you can enjoy fine dining, billiards, Wi-Fi and many other amenities. And the chef is happy to cook up your catch.

We were beyond excited to join Captain Steve’s Fishing Lodge once again. Steve Smith is a second-generation master fisherman. Steve and his brothers are lifetime professionals and impart their wisdom, adding to the enjoyment of the trip. The family owns and operates multiple fishing boats, including Captain Hook Charter Boat in Berkeley.

Smith started the fishing charter business in 1992 and remodeled the Lodge in 2006 to accommodate 24 guests.

Needless to say, the trip was a blast! We hope you can join us next year. The date for our next fishing trip in Alaska is May 26, 2018.

Happy reeling, everyone!
