The best foods to pair with Barbera

Uncategorized 🕔July 13, 2016

A wine that originated in Piedmont, Italy, a region not far from the borders of France and Switzerland, has found a second home in Northern California Sierra Foothills. Barbara has become increasingly popular in Amador and Placer Counties, including Auburn, mainly because of the unique soils and temperature fluctuations that are present.

Barbera grapes can be utilized in blends, but on their own produce bold, fruitful flavors. Left to age, the complex boldness can calm down slightly, but Barbera is a wine that is OK, and sometimes even recommended, to drink young. Everything from cherry, to blackberry, to vanilla can be tasted in a glass of vibrant Barbera wine.

Because of its boldness, higher acidic levels and smooth tannins, Barbera is an agile wine that goes with nearly any hearty meal. It can stand alongside the spiciest of dishes and be paired with a variety of meats, from flavorful to bland. Add a touch of citrus to your main course to bring out the tastes of this wine.

The best foods to pair a Barbera with are:

  • Grilled or roasted chicken
  • Sausage
  • Risotto (creamy)
  • Tomato-based pastas with meat (spaghetti with meatballs)
  • Meatloaf
  • Pizza topped with a meat
  • Ribs

At Mt. Vernon Winery, we are excited to have recently released our 2013 Cooper Vineyard Barbera. It spent more than 16 months in new American Oak casks and features aromatics of dried candied cranberries and toasty oak characteristics.

Come by for a tasting to try it out!
